Markakis ended up at negative WAR in both rWAR and fWAR this year

Simple point. Nick has been compensated for his production, Brian not nearly so much, no matter how much he declined over the past few years. Yeah we took a bath on his last contract, but we made out like bandits prior to that.

Per BB-ref, Roberts has been paid $62.3 mm in his career and has been worth 28.9 WAR. Markakis has been paid $49.2 mm and has been worth 23.5 WAR. I don't see much difference there one way or the other. BRob has been paid $2.16 mm per WAR, Nick has been paid $2.09 mm per WAR. The ratio will swing in Nick's favor (i.e., being more highly paid per WAR) after the final year of his contract, barring some unexpected leap in production by Nick.

Has the rate remained constant since 2001?

I laugh whenever I read that Brady is somehow the answer. He is a former O that kept himself in shape. Big deal. I have yet to see direct results of any player improving on the field from Brady's workouts. Maybe the Oriole players should start working out with a trainer that has documented results. Lets be honest here. Brady is at least "a little suspect" when it comes to getting results. In todays PED climate, I would think the Orioles would want to stay as far away from Brady as possible. But some how he s a VP. I think it is one of the most amazing stories in baseball.

Chris Tillman is waving hello at you.

What rate do you mean? Salaries in MLB have increased significantly since 2001, if that's your question. Per fangraphs, 1 WAR was worth about $2.8 mm in 2003, and was worth about $4.9 mm in 2013. I think what that suggests is that even if Nick, at the end of next year, has a higher ratio of total salary to total WAR, that is to be expected, since he has played during a period when WAR was worth more. Is that your point?

Please supply me with the dates that Tillman was working out with Brady. I doubt there is a direct correlation.

Chris Tillman has spent the last two offseasons with Brady. Before that he and Matusz were at Athletes Performance, San Diego. Word had it that they Surfed a bit.

So Brady is the reason that Tillman has progressed, but not the reason Matusz appears to be ready to pass out after facing two batters? You would have to give me a lot more information then one player maturing to convince me that the reason is Brady. There certainly is not enough data to produce a credible report that suggests that working out with Brady over any good trainer is beneficial. Throw in what I consider a huge risk and personally I'd stay away.

    • Awesome research, thanks. I was a fan in 1974 but had forgotten that string of five shutouts.  This last two weeks of rotation excellence (and your list) is giving me flashbacks to the summer of love (1967), when I started to make game logs to savor the strings of shutouts and low-hit gems by Oriole starters. Looking back now at the game logs kept by Baseball-Reference (manually, without your sorting skills!), it's hard to identify exactly which streak so impressed my teenage fan-meter, or even which year. Certainly 1968 was all about low scoring league-wide.  Maybe it was the stretch 22-27 May 1967 featuring Phoebus, Bertaina, Barber, McNally, and Phoebus again (good old 4-man rotation!), including three scoreless outings. Or Hardin and Brabender joining Phoebus, McNally and Palmer from 15 to 20 September, 1967. What about 1969, with Cuellar, Lopez and Leonhard joining the previous cast of McNally, Phoebus, and Hardin, twirling 10 starts (13-22 June) while allowing only 12 runs.  Anyway, it feels rather historic to see this run of high-end pitching from an Orioles rotation. Here's a chart to recap the numbers on this streak in progress... Date Starter IP H ER ERA (14 G) totals: 81.67 59 19 2.09 21-Apr Irvin 6.2 4 0   22-Apr Suarez 5.2 4 0   23-Apr Rodriguez 4.1 11 7   24-Apr Kremer 5.1 3 2   26-Apr Burnes 6 3 1   27-Apr Irvin 7 4 0   28-Apr Suarez 4 7 4   29-Apr Rodriguez 5.2 5 0   30-Apr Kremer 7 4 2   1-May Burnes 6 4 2   2-May Bradish 4.2 4 1   3-May Irvin 6.1 2 0   4-May Means 7 3 0   5-May Kremer 6 1 0
    • Somehow feels typical of Orioles to play up to the competition, and get burned by the pretenders... same with individual starting pitchers.
    • It was very obvious ...he would also take a look at his hand frequently. On Saturday, watching a clip in the dugout after one of the HR's, Kremer went to give a high five, pulled back and took a look at his hand. I thought it strange, and I thought something was off. He always appeared to be one of the more enthusiastic celebrators. It would seem the coaches would notice and probably did, but thought nothing of it. Certainly didn't affect his game.
    • Umpire really tried to screw us on Saturday.
    • I heard someone call it The Great American Smallpark.
    • I just looked thru their record a while ago.  Series against the Nats (2), White Sox, Marlins, Cardinals, Rockies and Angels makes their record of 1 win better than the O's way less impressive.  Their schedule coming up must be hell.
